Curriculum Approach
Thousands of children. Thousands of reasons.
Many children simply do not thrive in the one-size-fits-all approach of a traditional classroom. For a variety of reasons, including:
- The classroom pace is moving too slowly for the gifted student.
- The classroom pace is moving too fast—the student needs 55 minutes to master a concept but the bell always rings at 50.
- The student feels left out or bullied.
- The student can’t sit still in class or has a learning challenge.
- The student falls outside of the middle range in the classroom.
- The class is overcrowded.
- The student is homebound or traveling for sports or theatrics.
- The student wants to take a course not available at his or her regular school, including Honors, AP®, or unique elective courses.
The common denominator among parents who choose K¹² for their children is the aspiration to remove barriers that keep them from reaching their true potential—whatever those barriers are for their children. These parents are passionately motivated to resist restrictions imposed by a learning environment that is not well-suited to their child’s unique need. They understand the power of individualized learning and are willing to get involved.
The K12 curriculum, widely recognized as representing the gold standard in K-12 online education, offers rich, challenging, and engaging content. Offline materials, including textbooks, CDs, videos, and hands-on manipulatives, complement interactive online elements to address different learning styles and maximize the learning experience for all students.
Not all online courses are made the same.
We serve more online courses to the K-12 market than any other online curriculum provider—and it’s in large part because K12 raises the bar for delivery to the highest standard of course quality.
For instance, unlike many other course providers, K12 doesn’t just scan a textbook and call it an online course. Based on our patented methodology for online education, K12 courses are designed and developed for online delivery from the outset. A team of curriculum experts and course designers start from scratch, thoroughly scoping out the learning objectives for each course, and mapping out a strategy for how best to accomplish those objectives using online text, graphics, charts, illustrations, interactive demonstrations, offline reading materials or activities, and interactive online discussions (high school courses). And to ensure this is achieved correctly, K12 then conducts usability testing with intended audiences to make sure they can easily navigate through the lessons and master the learning objectives, as intended.
K12 knows that the combination of rich, engaging content with interesting, interactive demonstrations and activities helps students absorb and retain information. Graded assignments and assessments further allow students to demonstrate progress against learning objectives.
